Description

This activity is part of a 16-course series designed to equip licensed practitioners from medical, nursing, and related disciplines with a multidisciplinary approach to managing patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), also known as eczema.

8. What Are Emollients and How They Work in Eczema

Emollients are a mainstay therapy for AD, and all providers should be aware of how they work to achieve barrier repair. However, not all emollients work by the same mechanism. A detailed presentation of all types of emollients and their effect on the skin of patients with AD will be given.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the role of emollients in the management of AD
  • Categorize the various topical treatments of AD by mechanism of action and appraise their utility based on disease severity
  • Compare applications of ingredients for optimal benefits
