Welcome to week 23 focused on hair health!

Update on Pathophysiology of Hair Health

In this session, we review the structure function of hair as well as the hair cycle and how that impacts hair health and disease.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the basic structural components of the hair follicle and hair shaft
  2. Recognize where the hair follicle stem cells reside within the follicle
  3. Describe the phases of the hair growth structure

Non-Scarring Hair Loss

This course provides an overview of the different types of scarring hair loss along with a summary of treatments.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. List common types of non-scarring hair loss
  2. Identify botanical 5-alpha reductase inhibitors
  3. Recognize two adaptogens that may be helpful in minimizing the physiologic stress response

Scarring Hair Loss

In this lecture, we review mechanisms of scarring alopecia, the different categories of scarring alopecia, and basic approaches.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. List causes of scarring hair loss
  2. Identify supplements that help protect the gut 
  3. Explain the role hair style practices have in hair loss

After finishing Medical School and Dermatology Residency at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Bodemer completed a fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. She was the first Dermatologist to be board certified in both Dermatology and Integrative Medicine and currently is the only Dermatologist to serve on the Integrative Medicine Board. She has authored academic texts and curriculum and has spoken widely on a variety of topics related to Integrative Dermatology. She has always been drawn to exploring how lifestyle choices impact skin health and disease and feels that the most powerful role a physician can play is as an educator and guide, empowering people to get healthy and stay healthy.
