With the mapping of the Human Genome, science came to understand that "gene expression" is dependent upon numerous environmental, dietary, lifestyle, and behavioral influences. Whether or not a particular genetic predisposition is manifest or not is dependent upon the choices we make day and day out ... minute by minute.

Diet can affect our health in numerous ways, whether directly or indirectly. The things we ingest can affect the health of the microorganisms in the body and can lead to changes in the microbiome of the skin as well. This activity will examine the way that certain foods can alter the microbiome.

The skin hosts one of the most diverse species of microbes in our body. Dysbiosis, or the alterations of microbial composition with overgrowth of pathogenic species over commensal species, has been implicated in a number of skin diseases including atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and acne vulgaris.

This course is designed to help individuals learn about the gut skin axis, including the role of the microbiome, lipidome, and nutrition in relation to the skin.

This session will review the various causes of acne, describe the different subtypes of acne and discuss different conventional and integrative treatment approaches to treating acne with dermatologist Dr. Nicole Rocca. This discussion will be followed by an overview of the IECP curriculum to discover the benefits of integrative skin care and everything the program has to offer!

This session will discuss the role of the skin microbiome in both acne and rosacea. The influence of the microbiota on the presence of acne and rosacea will be discussed. The influence of shifting the skin microbiome as part of therapy, especially the influence of benzoyl peroxide.
