Welcome to module 1 where we'll review the fundamentals of dermatology!

Intro to Integrative Dermatology

This course will introduce learners to integrative dermatology and the DCIE program. The differences between conventional and integrative medicine and dermatology will be reviewed.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Define integrative medicine and integrative dermatology
  2. Distinguish the differences between conventional and integrative dermatology
  3. Discuss an overview of the DCIE course and resources to follow along with

Dermatology Physical Exam and Building the Differential Diagnosis

This course will review dermatology physical exam skills to identify differential diagnoses and when it is appropriate to consult with a dermatologist.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify key elements of the history of a dermatology patient using an integrative approach
  2. Recall key parts of the dermatology exam
  3. Distinguish situations which need consultation with a dermatologist

Dermatology Histology 101: Introduction and Basics

This course will introduce and review histology/dermatopathology findings of common skin disorders.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify key parts of the skin on histological examination
  2. Distinguish different forms of inflammation as they present on histology
  3. Recall patterns for skin cancers on histology

Malignant Skin Lesions

This course will review the clinical presentation of various malignant skin lesions as well as treatment and prevention.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify characteristics that can distinguish malignant lesions from benign skin lesions
  2. Review risk factors of malignant skin lesions
  3. List preventative measures for malignant skin lesions
  4. Identify appropriate treatments for melanocytic neoplasms, actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma
  5. Recall the appropriate way to biopsy a malignant lesion

Benign Skin Lesions

This course will review the clinical presentation of various benign skin lesions and how to distinguish them from similar appearing benign and malignant skin lesions.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe distinguishing factors between benign and malignant skin lesions
  2. Describe various benign skin lesions and their treatment and where applicable
  3. Identify the differential diagnosis of common benign skin lesions and their distinguishing factors

Procedures in Dermatology: Clinic and Surgical Overview and Surgical Techniques

This course provides a clinical and surgical overview of procedures and techniques used in dermatology.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Review surgical equipment & tools commonly used in dermatology
  2. Discuss shave biopsy, punch biopsy, excision and C&D
  3. Identify appropriate procedures and techniques used for the various types of skin lesions
  4. Define Mohs micrographic surgery

Shared Decision Making and Patient Centric Care in Dermatology

This course addresses the decision making process as a collaborative effort between the patient and provider.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Define ‘shared decision making’ regarding the roles played by both the patient and the practitioner
  2. Identify the Three key Elements of Shared Decision Making:
    • State that decisions are required
    • Recall the best available evidence
    • Organize patient values/preferences into the decision
