This set of lectures introduces the core principles, frameworks, and clinical tools that underpin integrative dermatology practice. Learners will explore foundational healing systems, approaches to patient assessment, practice development, and risk management while gaining practical skills to integrate whole-person care into dermatologic practice. Together, these lectures provide a strong starting point for clinicians looking to build confidence in integrative dermatology.
Introductory Lectures: Naturopathy - (Emma Norton, ND)
This session provides an overview of naturopathic medicine, including its educational background, current licensure, core principles, and key therapeutic modalities. Participants will explore how foundational naturopathic concepts can be applied in dermatologic care, with a focus on practical strategies that support skin health. The session also highlights ways naturopathic approaches can be thoughtfully integrated with conventional dermatologic treatment to support a more comprehensive, patient-centered model of care.
Learning Objectives:
After completing this session, participants will be able to:
Introductory Lectures: Functional / Gut Testing - (Sonal Choudhary, MD)
This session explores the gut–skin axis and the growing body of evidence linking the microbiome to various dermatologic conditions. Participants will learn how gut microbiome testing, Organic Acids Testing (OAT), and DUTCH testing work, including what each test measures and how to apply them in clinical practice. The session also focuses on identifying appropriate scenarios for ordering these functional tests, interpreting key findings in the context of dermatologic patient care, and critically evaluating the current evidence base to support clear, realistic patient communication.
Learning Objectives:
After completing this session, participants will be able to:
Introductory Lectures: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) - (Joseph Alban, DAc MS LAc)
This session introduces the foundational principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and their relevance in modern dermatologic care, including key concepts such as yin and yang, qi and blood, and the six pathogenic factors. Participants will explore how these frameworks inform diagnosis and treatment, while also examining how TCM can be integrated with Western medical approaches to support the management of chronic conditions and improve overall wellness. Through practical application, attendees will gain insight into developing integrative treatment strategies that incorporate TCM principles to enhance patient care and optimize skin health.
Learning Objectives:
After completing this session, participants will be able to:
Introductory Lectures: Ayurveda - (Asmi Berry, DO)
This session introduces the foundational principles of Ayurveda, including the dosha classification system and its framework for individualized patient assessment. Participants will explore the Ayurvedic perspective on the connection between digestive function, systemic inflammation, stress physiology, and skin health. The session also highlights lifestyle, dietary, and botanical strategies derived from Ayurveda that may complement conventional dermatologic therapies. Finally, it addresses key considerations for integrating Ayurvedic principles into dermatology practice while maintaining patient safety and evidence-based care.
Learning Objectives:
After completing this session, participants will be able to:
How to Build an Integrative Network - (Francesca Lewis, MD)
This session explores how dermatology and aesthetic practices can expand patient care through the development of an integrative network of trusted collaborators. Using a real-world practice model, learners will review how to identify high-value partners, determine which services to build in-house versus refer out, and design workflows that support coordinated, whole-patient care while maintaining clinical standards, safety, and consistency.
Learning Objectives:
After completing this session, participants will be able to:
This set of five lectures introduces foundational concepts in integrative dermatology, including naturopathic medicine, functional and gut testing, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, and the development of an integrative referral network. Participants will gain an understanding of the core principles, evidence, and clinical applications of these complementary approaches while exploring how they can be integrated with conventional dermatologic care. Together, these lectures provide practical strategies to support skin health, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and advance comprehensive, patient-centered care.
This activity is intended for dermatology clinicians, including physicians, physician associates/assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, residents, fellows, and other healthcare professionals interested in incorporating evidence-informed integrative approaches into dermatologic practice.
The annual Integrative Dermatology Symposium is designed to appeal to practitioners across disciplines. It addresses emerging trends, evidence-based therapies, and practical approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and management of skin disease through an integrative lens. Because nearly one-third of the population is affected by a skin disorder, there is an ongoing need for best-practice sharing and cross-disciplinary collaboration to improve patient care and outcomes. This educational activity introduces foundational concepts in naturopathic medicine, functional and gut testing, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, and integrative care networks, equipping clinicians with practical knowledge to thoughtfully incorporate complementary approaches into dermatologic practice while maintaining patient safety and evidence-based care.
