Healthy Hair Summit

Hair is important to how we project our sense of health from both the inside and the outside. Men and women spend billions of dollars on maintaining healthy hair. In this summit, we explore how what we put in and on our body affects our hair. We will cover topics ranging from the science of the hair cycle, the influence of sleep and stress, the role of nutrition and gut health, how the ingredients in hair care products affect your hair and skin, natural and botanical approaches to hair care, and the science behind the use of wigs and hair extensions. Science meets the practical as Dr. Raja Sivamani delves into the secrets of hair science with leading hair care experts.

1. Science of the Hair Cycle and the Influence of Stress, Gut Health, and Nutraceuticals - Sophia Kogan, MD

This interview offers an integrative look at hair thinning and highlights multiple factors that influence hair health such as stress, gut health, environment, hormones, and more.

2. Alopecia Areata and What's New With Treatment - Paradi Mirmirani, MD

Board certified dermatologist and hair expert Dr. Paradi Mirmirani talks with Dr. Raja Sivamani about the latest in alopecia areata. Dr. Mirmirani discusses what causes alopecia areata and the new and emerging therapies to treat this autoimmune hair condition.

In this interview, Dr. Bodemer discusses the differences between the different types of hair pieces that can be helpful for cosmetic camouflage of hair loss. She goes over each type of hair piece that is most appropriate and what people should look for when choosing a hairpiece.

After finishing Medical School and Dermatology Residency at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Bodemer completed a fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. She was the first Dermatologist to be board certified in both Dermatology and Integrative Medicine and currently is the only Dermatologist to serve on the Integrative Medicine Board. She has authored academic texts and curriculum and has spoken widely on a variety of topics related to Integrative Dermatology. She has always been drawn to exploring how lifestyle choices impact skin health and disease and feels that the most powerful role a physician can play is as an educator and guide, empowering people to get healthy and stay healthy.

Iris Rubin
MD

Dr. Iris Rubin is the Founder and Chief Medical Officer of SEEN skin-caring hair care. Dr. Rubin received her undergraduate degree with honors from Stanford University, and her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She did her dermatology residency at the University of Chicago and Harvard Medical School, and served as academic chief resident at Harvard. She completed a laser surgery fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Wellman Center for Photomedicine. Dr. Rubin has conducted research on development of a vein-selective laser to improve port-wine stain treatment, and has an issued patent based on her research. Dr. Rubin has been an invited speaker at meetings sponsored by the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS), American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), Washington D.C. Dermatological Society, and Children’s National Medical Center. Dr. Rubin’s previous positions include Medical Director of the Dermatologic and Vascular Laser Surgery Program at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington D.C., Dermatologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a faculty member at Harvard Medical School, and Director of Government Communications and Education for the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS).

Dr. Paradi Mirmirani completed residencies in Internal Medicine and Dermatology and a clinical hair research fellowship at the University of California San Francisco. She is practicing at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vallejo, California where she serves as the assistant chief of dermatology, the regional director for hair disorders and the local research chair. In addition to having faculty appointments at the University of California, San Francisco and Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Mirmirani has over 50 peer review publications and regularly lectures at national and international conferences on various hair disorders topics. Dr. Mirmirani co-authored “Cicatricial Alopecia: An Approach to Diagnosis and Management”, the first book dedicated to the topic. Her awards include the UCSF Outstanding Clinical Teacher, and the San Francisco Dermatologic Society’s Key Dermatology Leader for hair. Along with her clinical and research activities, she serves on the scientific advisory board of the Cicatricial Alopecia Research Foundation, is on the clinical research advisory board for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, and is a past member of the Board of Directors for the North American Hair Research Society

Dr. Sophia Kogan, M.D. is the co-founder and Chief Medical Advisor of Nutrafol, the first clinically effective hair wellness supplement to use medical-grade, bio-optimized ingredients to multi-target the root causes of hair thinning.

Dr. Kogan earned her medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. She did residency training at Tufts New England Medical Center and at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where she completed a research fellowship in pediatric dermatology.

In search for answers on issues of her own health and hair thinning during stressful times of medical school and residency, Dr. Kogan discovered the benefits of an integrative approach with botanicals. Dr. Kogan has spent the past decade researching hair loss and has been coined by her peers as an expert in integrative hair health. She speaks frequently as an expert on this topic at meetings and conferences.

In her free time, Dr. Kogan actively practices self-care through dance, yoga, meditation, and clean eating. She is also a certified Kundalini Yoga teacher.

Prof Dawson earned his Bachelor's in Chemistry from WVU, his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from UNC, and was a Clinical Pediatrics Medical Genetics Fellow at the Duke University Medical Center. While at UNC Tom identified and patented a novel proto-oncogene, merTK, now a target for drug development in childhood leukemia. At Duke, Tom worked with Dr. Y-T Chen on metabolic disease and was a team member on Myozyme, a treatment for Pompe Disease (the subject of the movie "Extraordinary Measures"). From 1998-2015 Tom worked in P&G Beauty, understanding and intervening in skin, hair, and scalp disorders including aging, dandruff, and hair loss. He was honored with the John Smale Award as P&G's Top Technologist 2002. In 2013 he relocated from Cincinnati to Singapore and led development of the Singapore Innovation Center life sciences segment.

In 2015 Tom joined A*STAR to lead the hair and skin health programs. He leads the A*STAR cutaneous microbiome program, which was recently awarded significant funding (the "Asian Skin Microbiome Program" or ASMP). The ASMP will define the healthy skin microbiome and its role in skin homeostasis. Tom remains committed to leveraging microbiology to improve skin health and retains his emphasis on Malassezia, including leading the global consortium on Malassezia phylogeny, physiology, and pathogenesis (the "Malassezia Research Consortium"). He also leads a translational program fusing hair shaft biogenesis, biochemical synthesis, and physical measurement to create better hair treatments.

Tom is Past President of the Singapore Society for Skin Research, Vice Chair of Mycology and Eukaryotic Microbiology, IUMS, Academic Editor of Frontiers and PLoS 1, and Chair of the A*STAR SRIS Human Biomedical Research Act committee. He is also the CEO of a private consulting firm, Beauty Care Strategics, consulting with multiple consumer care companies, both multi-national and local.

Dr. Raja Sivamani is a board-certified dermatologist and practices as an integrative dermatologist at Pacific Skin Institute. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Clinical Dermatology at the University of California, Davis and Director of Clinical Research and the Clinical Trials Unit.He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the California State University, Sacramento and an Associate Professor of Dermatology at California Northstate University, College of Medicine.He engages in clinical practice as well as both clinical and translational research that integrates bioengineering, nutrition, cosmetics, and skin biology. With training in both Allopathic and Ayurvedic medicine, he takes an integrative approach to his patients and in his research.He has published over 100 peer-reviewed research manuscripts, 10 textbook chapters, and a textbook entitled Cosmeceuticals and Active Cosmetics, 3rd Edition with a passion for expanding the evidence and boundaries of integrative medicine for skin care.
