What You'll Learn

There are multiple pathophysiological mechanisms that can result in and contribute to conditions of hair loss. These can include genetic predispositions, nutrient deficiencies, hormonal changes, and as emerging research suggests, even alterations in the gut and skin microbiome.

There are also numerous publications that demonstrate a bidirectional link between lifestyle factors, such as stress and sleep, in conditions of hair loss. To optimize patient care and increase the likelihood of response to treatment, it is important to maintain a holistic approach. This activity will review the associations between stress, sleep, and hair loss, and then discuss herbal and nutraceutical interventions that may influence these pathways in a beneficial manner.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the associations between stress, sleep, and hair loss
  • Discuss the mechanism of action of herbal and nutraceutical interventions used to support sleep and mitigate the effects of psychological stress.
  • Summarize the current state of literature on the clinical use of these herbs and nutraceuticals in relation to hair loss.
