Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of clinicians and non-clinicians involved in the care of patients within dermatology.

Welcome to module 4 as we journey through mind-body and mindfulness!

Mind-Body and Mindfulness Yoga

In this session, we review the branches of yoga and explore the impact of stress on the skin and ways to mitigate it with breath work, mindfulness, and movement.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Familiarize with the history and types of Yoga
  • Understand the mind-body relationship; specifically, the effects of stress on the body
  • Learn the benefits as well as adverse affects of Yoga

Practical Meditation

This lecture offers an introduction to meditation and common meditative practices, including how meditation impacts health.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Explain three health benefits of meditation
  • Practice three common meditative practices
  • Relate barriers to meditation

Adaptogens and Adrenal Support

This lecture will cover the basics of how stress can impact the body along the HPA axis. The role of the adrenals, Nrf2, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in stress will be explored. The goal and role of adaptogens will be discussed in light of integrating research with concepts from conventional, Ayurvedic, Chinese, and Naturopathic medicine.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role of cortisol in chronic stress and how diurnal cortisol slope connects with health outcomes
  • Examine the role of Nrf2 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in stress and how botanicals affect BDNF levels
  • Define the role of adaptogenic herbs and their evidence in modulating stress

Sleep and Sleep Enhancement

In this session, we explore the importance of good sleep in health and the ramifications of poor sleep.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe some of the positive health effects of good sleep
  • Examine some of the deleterious effects of poor sleep
  • Identify some techniques, supplements, and approaches to improving sleep
