Welcome to week 5 as we investigate the microbiome and modulating the microbiome!

Method Participation

Participants must 1) read the program information, 2) study the educational activity, 3) complete the posttest by recording the best answer to each quiz question, and 4) complete the evaluation form.

Skin Microbiome

This lecture will review the fundamentals of the bacteria, fungi, and viruses on the skin and the importance of their roles. We also discuss perturbations in the microbiome and the potential effects.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the functions of the cutaneous microbiome
  2. Outline some of the deleterious effects of a disrupted microbiome
  3. Identify some techniques, supplements, and approaches to maintaining and possibly improving the microbiome, as well as those that may harm it

Gut Microbiome

This course will provide an overview to gut health and testing. The basics of the gut anatomy, gut-skin axis, and the gut microbiome will be discussed along with ways to differentiate treatment approaches.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the role of the mucin layer in the gut
  2. Recall the mechanisms involved in the gut-skin axis
  3. Categorize the roles of the different types of short chain fatty acids

Prebiotics, Probiotics, and Postbiotics

This session will help demystify the difference between pre-, pro- and post-biotics, where they are found in our diets, and the role they have in health and disease.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Define prebiotic, probiotic, and post-biotic
  2. Evaluate the role that pre-, pro- and post-biotics play in health
  3. List food sources for pre-, pro-, and post-biotics

SIBO

Small intestinal bowel overgrowth refers to dysbiosis within the small intestine. This lecture will review the causes for SIBO and discuss how it is identified and diagnosed. Correlations to the skin and treatment approaches will be summarized.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the causes for SIBO and how it is diagnosed
  2. Evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of breath testing for SIBO
  3. Recall the evidence for the use of diet and botanicals for the treatment of SIBO
