Method Participation

Participants must 1) read the program information, 2) study the educational activity, 3) complete the posttest by recording the best answer to each quiz question, and 4) complete the evaluation form.

Sun Protection: An Update on Pathophysiology

Sun protection is discussed by many dermatologists and formally advocated by the American Academy of Dermatology. Despite this, a great deal of unknowns remain. We explore the science of sun protection in detail.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the types of sun protection in sunscreens
  2. Outline potential benefits of mineral based preparations and chemical based preparations
  3. Identify some of the concerns about mineral based preparations and chemical based preparations

Topical and Oral Approaches to Sun Protection

This lecture will explore the role of sunscreens, antioxidants, and oral supplements in their role in photoprotection. The mechanisms of action will be discussed along with the clinical evidence. Strategies to optimize sunscreen selection and use will be discussed as well.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the role of different factors in sunscreen efficacy against sun protection
  2. Diagram the mechanism of action of antioxidants with respect to UV related skin damage
  3. Review the evidence for the role of oral supplements in sun protection

Photoprotective Foods and Supplements

This lecture will review the role diet plays in protecting the skin from UV radiation damage.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. List 2 food-based antioxidants that have UV protective qualities
  2. Summarize the significance of inflammation on sun damage and how a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods can be helpful
  3. Identify types of dietary fats that may influence skin cancer risk

Ayurvedic Approach to Sun Protection

This lecture will explore the Ayurvedic concepts behind sunburns and how sun protection can be approached from an Ayurvedic perspective.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the Ayurvedic imbalance associated with sunburns
  2. Review the Ayurvedic approaches to reduce sun induced damage and erythema
