Apoaequorin is a protein that comes from a jellyfish. It is marketed as a dietary supplement in the product Prevagen. There is little evidence for its use.
Apoaequorin comes from the Aequorea victoria species. Problems with calcium regulation in the brain may play a role in mental decline. Because apoaequorin has a similar structure to human calcium-binding proteins, some believe it might help regulate calcium in the brain and reduce mental decline.
People take apoaequorin to prevent the decline in memory and thinking skills that occurs normally with age, as well as to improve memory, but there is no good scientific evidence to support its use for these or other purposes.
The dietary supplement Prevagen has been the subject of legal action by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and various state governments alleging false advertising claims.
