This session explores an integrative approach to eczema management, combining conventional dermatologic treatments with evidence-based complementary therapies. Emphasis will be placed on the role of nutrition, stress management, microbiome balance, and individualized care strategies to address the root causes and enhance skin healing.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the underlying pathophysiology of eczema and outline standard dermatologic treatment options.
  • Explain the principles and evidence supporting integrative strategies in eczema care.
  • Identify dietary, environmental, and lifestyle factors that contribute to eczema flare-ups.
  • Incorporate stress management and mind-body interventions to support immune and skin health.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans that combine conventional and complementary approaches for optimal patient outcomes.

Peter Lio
MD

Dr. Peter Lio is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his internship in Pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital, and his Dermatology training at Harvard where he served as Chief Resident in Dermatology. Dr. Lio is the founding director of the Chicago Integrative Eczema Center and has spoken nationally and internationally about atopic dermatitis, as well as alternative medicine.
