Description
While there are many different risk factors for developing atopic dermatitis (AD), filaggrin is one of the central players in the pathogenesis and severity of the disease. Filaggrin is a protein found in the epidermis critical to the formation of corneocytes and maintaining the epidermal barrier. While filaggrin gene (FLG) mutations are often the cause of reduced filaggrin, deficient levels of filaggrin are also found in AD patients without any FLG mutations. Preliminary research shows that L-histidine supplementation could increase filaggrin production and be a viable and safe part of an eczema treatment plan.
