Her and her family enjoy their subsistence lifestyle in their small remote community in Alaska.

    Matthew Zirwas, MD, attended medical school and completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh. He served as the residency director at Ohio State University from 2006 to 2015. Dr. Zirwas has over 200 peer-reviewed publications and has conducted almost 100 clinical trials.

    Hera is currently a chief resident at University of Arkansas, Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock Arkansas. She will be practicing in Cary, North Carolina starting August 2025.Hera went to medical school at California Northstate University and was a clinical research fellow 2019-2020 at UC Davis and Integrative Skin Science and Research. She is actively pursuing a medical career that focuses on integrative, whole body health, and developing her own understanding and research on the needs of modern population of diverse peoples and unique solutions that work and are safe for use. She is committed to finding the bridge between hard evidence-based science and compassionate patient centered care throughout her medical training. She has interests in cultural shifts that investigate meaning in medicine and medical education as she has been active participant in meditation programs, was on the Wellness Committee, and was a student director of “Healer’s Art” program at her medical school, and is 40-hour training certified Domestic Violence Issues Advocate for the My Sister’s House (a culturally competent program for Asian and Pacific Islander advocacy for those impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking). Another major research project she undertook was investigation of the Gut-Brain-Immunity connection through looking at modulation of T cell function by serotonin. She also has experience working in the bioengineering industry working with 3D tissue engineering, 3D cell cultures, cellulosic biofuel research.Hera is from Manhattan, Kansas or “The Little Apple,” and went to UC Berkeley for undergraduate education. She plans on pursuing a career in dermatology with interests in integrative approaches and differences in pathology within dermatology in ethnic skin.

    Dr. Olivia Hsu Friedman holds a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, completed an additional diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicine Dermatology and is a NCCAOM board licensed Illinois acupuncturist. She is the owner of Amethyst Holistic Skin Solutions and treats dermatology patients in office and via video conference using only herbal medicine. Outside of the office, Olivia serves as a Board Member for the American Society of Acupuncturists and as faculty for the Chicago Eczema Support Center.

    Sonali Nanda is a fourth-year medical student at The University of Virginia, expected to graduate medical school in May 2020. She is applying for a residency position in dermatology this fall. Sonali graduated from The University of Virginia undergraduate program with honors and with research distinction in Neuroscience. Prior to attending medical school, she completed a Masters of Science in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University. Sonali then worked in clinical and basic science research at The Phillip Frost Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery in Miami, Florida and explored her interests of hair, pediatrics, medical dermatology, and nutrition in dermatology. She is interested in creating content that will educate physicians and the public on current topics in dermatology.

    Dr. Rubaina Dang is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor practicing in California. She specializes in a variety of hormonal, gastrointestinal and dermatological related conditions, providing a comprehensive approach on healing from the inside out. She is passionate about regenerative aesthetics, serving as a PRP educator and trainer to the medical community. In addition, she has been a hair health educator at Nutrafol and is currently serving as a primary investigator for various clinical trials at the Integrative Research Institute. She is passionate about utilizing integrative therapeutics to support the body internally as well as topically, empowering others to achieve healthy skin from within.

    Dr. Iltefat Hamzavi is a dermatologist who works at Henry Ford Hospital and Hamzavi/Dermatology Specialists. His work has a focus on vitiligo, photomedicine, and hidradenitis suppurativa. Within vitiligo his work has focused on improving phototherapy options for vitiligo patients. His group has also led North American efforts in developing surgical treatments for vitiligo. He has participated in developing the VASI score and updated scores as a way to measure treatment response for vitiligo patients. He is also one of the founders and Co-chair of the Global Vitiligo Foundation. This is a group which aims to improve the lives of vitiligo patients by supporting initiatives like the World Vitiligo Day and vitiligo research updates. He is a passionate metro Detroiter, husband, and father of 3.

    Jayagopal Parla
    Professor Jayagopal Parla is an internationally known speaker, educator, and practitioner of Ayurveda, with extensive clinical, teaching, and research experience. He is a Professor of Ayurveda at the American University of Complementary Medicine where he also serves as the Chair of the Department of Ayurveda. He is founder director of Athreya Ayurvedic Integrative Health Center, Long Beach and vice president of Letsallbehealthy.com. In addition, he is a visiting faculty member at various Ayurvedic schools including Japan Ayurveda School, Tokyo and Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCUHS), Whittier, CA. Jayagopal holds a Bachelor’s degree in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery from Bangalore University, India, and Master’s degree (Ayurveda) from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, India. He also has a Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from SCUHS. In addition, he is a certified yoga therapist. Jayagopal has presented and published several scientific papers in national and international publications.

    Dr. Tom S. Liu graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors and Phi Beta Kappa from Northwestern University. He went on to attend the prestigious University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and the Booth School of Business where he completed a competitive 5-year combined MD-MBA program. While at the University of Chicago, Dr. Liu discovered his passion for plastic surgery during a medical mission to Puerto Rico to help reconstruct children with congenital deformities. Combining his love of medicine with his new business knowledge, Dr. Liu worked on philanthropic medical ventures culminating with the fundraising of $10,000 for a Puerto Rican foundation specializing in pediatric reconstructive plastic surgery. Dr. Liu graduated from the University of Chicago with Honors and was a nominee for the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.

    Sandra is an acupuncturist, Chinese herbalist, and the founder of Treatment by Lanshin. In practice for over a decade, she focuses on treating skin disorders and skin rejuvenation because she believes the future of skin health will greatly evolve with the unique approach of Chinese medicine. Specially trained in dermatology, she uses Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture to resolve common skin problems like acne, rosacea, dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis.Through her many years of correcting pain and tension patterns of the body, Sandra has developed a deep understanding of structural and tissue relationships that she now applies to her work rejuvenating skin and face. Using acupuncture, facial gua sha, cupping, and other Chinese medically derived techniques, she has developed methods of correcting tissue tension patterns that she believes lead to common aging concerns like sagging skin, premature wrinkling, etc.Providing education to clients is of key importance to Sandra’s work in helping them create lasting patterns of health and vitality. Teaching self-care and home practices have become an increasingly larger aspect of her work for this reason. Currently, Sandra teaches Facial Gua Sha Self-care workshops at home and across the country and plans to continue adding new classes to her roster.

    Dr. Francene Steinberg is a Professor of Nutrition and Chair of the Department of Nutrition at the University of California, Davis. She is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and directs the Didactic Program in Dietetics at UC Davis. Dr. Steinberg’s research program focuses on foods, food components and food choices which impact health outcomes. She has over 20 years of research expertise in conducting human randomized clinical trials to study endothelial function, inflammation, markers of lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, and metabolic homeostasis. Her particular areas of interest are the physiologic effects of bioactive food components on health, including skin health, and on decreasing chronic disease risk markers.

    Dr. Cassandra Quave is Curator of the Emory University Herbarium and Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Human Health at Emory University, where she leads antibiotic drug discovery research initiatives and teaches undergraduate courses on medicinal plants, food and health. Trained as a medical ethnobotanist, her research is focused on the documentation and biochemical analysis of botanical remedies used in the traditional treatment of infectious and inflammatory skin disease. To date, she has authored more than 60 publications, 2 edited books and 3 patents. Dr. Quave is a Past President of the President of the Society for Economic Botany, an international society with the mission of fostering research and education on the past, present, and future uses of plants by people. Her work has been profiled in the New York Times Magazine and National Geographic Channel, and featured on NPR and several major news outlets.     Dr. Marc Halpern is the founder and President of the California College of Ayurveda, the oldest school of Ayurvedic Medicine in the United States and a leader in the development of Ayurvedic Medicine in the West. He is the co-founder of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association, the National Council on Ayurvedic Education and the California Association of Ayurvedic Medicine. He has written three textbooks on the principles and clinical practices of Ayurvedic Medicine, used at colleges across the United States, and the popular book, Healing Your Life; Lessons on the Path of Ayurveda. He is also the author of the best-selling Meditation CD; Yoga Nidra and Self-Healing. Dr. Halpern has received awards for his service to the Ayurvedic profession in both India and the United States.

    Alan M Dattner, MD is a board-certified dermatologist, and immunologist for over 50 years, with key studies at the NIH. He has been practicing integrative and holistic dermatology for 40 years, integrating together dermatology, nutrition, herbology, functional medicine, Applied Kinesiology, principles of immunology (including cross-reactive immune recognition), energetic medicine, micro-current diagnosis and treatment, food allergy, and elements from Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, psychosomatic medicine, and homeopathy. Dr. Dattner is the founder of HolisticDermatology.com. He has written the chapter on Complementary and Alternative Dermatology in Fitzpatrick’s Dermatology in General Medicine, as well as scientific articles and book chapters on immunology and integrative dermatology and lectured internationally.     Mazin Al-Khafaji is the founder and director of Avicenna Centre for Chinese Medicine, Avicenna Skin Clinic and Dermatology-M. He is recognized as the leading expert in the field of dermatology and Chinese medicine in the West, and over the past three decades has taught thousands of students worldwide. Mazin started his studies in Chinese medicine and the Chinese language in 1979. He graduated as an acupuncturist in the UK in 1983 and thereafter continued his studies in China for four years as one of the first Western students to do so. He was awarded the first Sino-British scholarship to study alongside Chinese students at a TCM school and graduated from the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Shanghai in 1987 as Doctor of Chinese Medicine. Since his return from China in 1987, he has taught Chinese medicine to new generations of herbal practitioners worldwide and is respected as one of the most inspirational teachers and clinicians in the TCM world today.
